In 2018 a memorial in Montgomery Alabama was unveiled by the Equal Justic Initiative to honor victims of slavery and lynching. We wanted to localize this story but after a back and forth with their director we were not able to obtain any information about the individual victims included in the memorial.
We decided to do the research ourselves. I started by writing a scraper for the University of Washingtons database on lynching and filtering out by Kentucky. We also did some research and clarified some of the narratives using our own archives. The result was an interactive map of known lynchings in Kentucky by county.
